Lightning keep St. Louis with four-year extension

07/01/2010 - Tampa, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Tampa Bay Lightning struck quickly to retain one of their veteran leaders, signing forward Martin St. Louis to a four-year contract extension Thursday.

"Today is a great day for the Lightning organization," said Tampa general manager Steve Yzerman. "Marty means so much to this franchise, both on and off the ice. His hard work and dedication are unsurpassed and we are thrilled that he will finish his career here in Tampa Bay."

The 35-year-old enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2009-10, connecting for 29 goals and 94 points while participating in all 82 regular-season games. Many of his passes were converted by second-year linemate Steven Stamkos, who tied for the NHL lead in goals with 51.

An undrafted free agent who played college hockey at the University of Vermont, St. Louis broke into the league with Calgary in 1998, but hit his stride when he came to Tampa prior to the 2000-01 campaign.

Over his 11-year career, the native of the Montreal suburbs has posted 267 goals and 679 points in 772 games. He is a Stanley Cup winner with the Lightning in 2004, the same season he was awarded the Hart Trophy as the league's MVP.

"Since coming to Tampa in 2000, the goals for my playing career have evolved," St. Louis admitted. "I have now enjoyed many team and personal accolades, the highlight being our 2004 Stanley Cup win. Now, the goal is to lead the Lightning back towards the top of the NHL while finishing my career here. We'll do everything we can as a team to achieve the highest levels again."

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch

Despite the debate that's swirling , Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, coach Dennis Green said today. The Arizona Cardinals are the +7 point underdog at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com for this Sunday's game.

Green's comment came in a statement released by the team following an ESPN report that Green decided that rookie Matt Leinart would replace Warner as starter for Sunday's game at Atlanta.

"Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," Green told the AP. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."
