Fading Flames welcome Red Wings to the Saddledome
Hockey Betting Lines
03/20/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Calgary Flames will attempt to halt a potentially back- breaking losing stretch this evening when they play host to the Detroit Red Wings at Pengrowth Saddledome.
The Flames dropped their third straight game on Saturday -- a 4-2 loss to Minnesota -- and have lost five of its last six overall, going 1-4-1 in that stretch. Calgary now leads the streaking Colorado Avalanche by only four points for the eighth and last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Daymond Langkow and Alex Tanguay each scored for the Flames in the home loss to the Wild. Even with the loss, Calgary has a league-high 28 wins as the host. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed four goals on 26 shots in the loss.
Saturday's contest was a opener of a three-game home stretch for Calgary. The residency also includes a visit from powerhouse Nashville on Thursday.
Detroit, meanwhile, will once again attempt to leapfrog the Predators in the Western standings. The Red Wings are just one point behind idle Nashville for the top spot in both the conference and the Central Division.
The Red Wings passed Nashville in the standings early last week after a home- and-home sweep over the Preds, but that work was undone when the squad lost to Vancouver, 4-1 on Saturday.
Pavel Datsyuk tallied for the Red Wings, who lost for just the third time in nine games. Datsyuk's goal extended his league-best points streak to 10 games. He has three goals and 13 assists in that span.
Dominik Hasek took the loss despite making 35 saves.
The Red Wings will also be trying again to capture their 100th point of the season. Detroit has reached the 100-point plateau in each of the last six seasons and if it accomplishes the feat again this season -- an excellent possibility -- it would mark the second-longest streak in league history, behind only Montreal's eight-year run from 1974-75 to 1981-82.
Detroit is 19-14-4 on the road this season and will return home for a three- game set, beginning on Thursday.
Calgary and Detroit will play for the fourth and final time this season. Both teams have done the job at home, as the Red Wings have won both of their home tilts against Calgary this season, while the Flames' lone win against Detroit this season came at Pengrowth Saddledome in November.
The teams have split the last eight meetings overall, though Detroit has lost two of three in Calgary.

SPORTS BETTING
NFL Football Betting OnlineIn terms of sports wagering, the NFL is "the most popular game in town." The explanation behind that is easy.
It is called the "pointspread."
Many years ago, NFL games, as well as the more popular college games, used straight odds as a vehicle for betting. For example, if the Bears were playing the Giants, and it shaped up as a competitive contest, the Bears might be, say, a 7/5 favorite. If they were playing an also-ran, it might be 10/1. Well, there is a point where a line becomes prohibitive, as far as betting the favorite. And who would waste money betting an underdog that has virtually no chance? Such a setup did not contribute to promoting betting action.
But in modern sports betting, a "pointspread" is used.
A NFL pointspreads are exactly that, a pre-established point difference between the two sides that will, for all intents and purposes, create a handicap that evens things out, and in doing so, produces comparable wagering activity on both sides of that proposition. So in lieu of a odds figure in which to bet the team to win outright, the Bears might be a three-point favorite over the New York Giants, and a 17-point favorite over the also-ran. Now that the team that is the underdog can "get" points, there can be equal action on both sides.
In sportsbooks, this is usually done with efficiency by charging the losing bettors 10% extra - in effect, bettors are laying 11/10 on those games. So they are actually betting $110 to win $100. If they lose, they pay the "vig." If they win, they simply collect.
The establishment of the pointspread as the corner stone around which team sports like football can be wagered upon was truly what brought gridiron betting into the stratosphere for online football betting .
