Cards pull away to down Reds

05/01/2010 - St. Louis, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Skip Schumaker started a three-run rally in the eighth with a run-scoring single to break a tie score, and St. Louis went on to post a 6-3 win over the Reds in the second of a three-game series at Busch Stadium.
Schumaker also walked twice and scored two runs, while Albert Pujols knocked in two with a double and bases-loaded walk for the Cardinals, who saw a five- game win streak halted in Friday's opener.
David Freese hit a solo home run and doubled, and Ryan Franklin (1-0) picked up the win by tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Kyle Lohse was effective in a seven-inning start, fanning eight without walking a batter while giving up just one run on five hits.
Cincinnati's Homer Bailey pitched well over 6 2/3 innings, holding the opposition to three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
However, the Reds bullpen let the game get away by allowing three runs and walking four. Carlos Fisher (0-1) was charged with two of those runs and suffered the loss.
Joey Votto was 2-for-4 and drove in a run for the Reds, who had rattled off five straight wins, including a 3-2 decision Friday in the opener.
After the Reds scored twice in the top half of the eighth to tie things up, the hosts came right back with three in their turn to grab a 6-3 edge. Jason LaRue doubled to left off Fisher with one away and was replaced by pinch- runner Jamie Garcia, who moved up on a groundout. Fisher walked Brendan Ryan before giving way to Daniel Ray Herrera.
The lefty-batting Schumaker then slapped a fastball up in the zone the other way to plate the go-ahead run. Mike Lincoln proceeded to walk the bases loaded, then forced in a run with another free pass. Micah Owings became the fourth Reds pitcher of the inning, and produced the same result with a walk to make it 6-3.
Franklin finally struck out to end the inning, then notched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the win.
Freese's solo shot to right in the fourth inning served as the difference for six frames until Cincy was able to tie the game in the seventh. Jay Bruce started with a triple and trotted home on an Orlando Cabrera sacrifice fly.
The Cards immediately responded with two in the bottom half. Schumaker drew a one-out walk to get things started, stole second and raced home on Pujols' double into the left-field corner.
Bailey then exited in favor of Fisher with Matt Holliday at the plate. Holliday stung a 2-1 fastball toward third base and Scott Rolen made a nice diving stop, but one-hopped the throw to first and Votto couldn't come away with the scoop as Pujols crossed home for a 3-1 game.
The lead was short-lived, though, as the Reds pushed across two runs in their next at-bat with St. Louis turning to its bullpen.
Blake Hawksworth started the inning and walked the leadoff man Ramon Hernandez before giving up a one-out single to Brandon Phillips. Dennys Reyes was then summoned to the mound and Votto ripped an RBI single into center field.
Phillips took third on the play and scored the tying run on a shallow sac fly by Rolen following a weak throw from Cardinals center fielder Colby Rasmus.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
