Brodeur's 98th shutout gives Devils win over Stars

Hockey Betting Lines

10/22/2008 - Newark, NJ (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Martin Brodeur stopped all 21 shots he faced to record his 98th career shutout, moving him five behind Terry Sawchuk's NHL career mark, leading the New Jersey Devils to a 5-0 rout of the Dallas Stars at Prudential Center.

The victory was also the 543rd of Brodeur's illustrious career, moving him within eight of Patrick Roy's NHL record.

John Madden had a pair of goals for the Devils, who have won three in a row and had their highest offensive output of the season. Zach Parise had a goal and an assist in the win, while Jamie Langenbrunner and David Clarkson lit the lamp as well.

Marty Turco stopped three of the 17 shots he faced but was yanked in the second period in favor of Tobias Stephan. Stephan halted 10-of-12 shots for the Stars, who have dropped three of their last four tilts.

Langenbrunner gave the Devils a 1-0 lead not even two minutes into the game, which would stand through the first stanza. He gained control of the puck behind the net, skated towards the right circle and backhanded a shot past Turco.

Madden's two goals, within 72 seconds of each other, gave New Jersey a commanding 3-0 lead midway through the second period.

At the 9:05 mark, Madden took a pass from Paul Martin and skated down the slot. As he veered towards the left circle, a snap shot beat Turco and the Devils were sitting on a 2-0 cushion.

Then, 1:12 later, Bryce Salvador launched the puck into Dallas' offensive zone from just behind the blue line on the left side. Turco stopped the blast, but it trickled out in front of the net; Madden then gained control, skated to the left and wristed it in past an out-of-position Turco.

The goal, which ballooned New Jersey's lead to 3-0, chased Turco from the game in favor of Stephan. The new goalie stopped all three shots he faced the rest of the second frame.

Another two goals, this time 53 seconds apart, essentially put the game out of reach.

At the 9:49 mark of the third, Andy Greene took a slap shot from the right point which was stopped by Stephan. Parise skated in and backhanded the puck into the goal for a 4-0 lead.

Clarkson's slap shot from the high point found the twine just past the midway mark of the final frame.

Game Notes

Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond played in his first NHL game and recorded his first assist...Brodeur was facing Dallas forward Sean Avery after the two were involved in a controversial episode in the opening round of last year's playoffs. Avery, who was playing for the Rangers at the time, planted himself in front of the net and began faceguarding the star netminder while waving his stick in front of Brodeur's face. There was no formal rule against the action, until the day after the incident, when NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell placed that type of action under the umbrella of unsportsmanlike conduct. The new interpretation is now informally known as the "Sean Avery Rule". Avery had four shots in Wednesday's defeat...New Jersey hadn't had a home contest since defeating the New York Islanders to open the season on October 10. Beginning with Wednesday's triumph, the Devils will play six of seven and 11 of their next 14 games in Newark...New Jersey has taken six of the last eight meetings with Dallas, and the Stars have dropped four straight road tests against the Devils.
